"Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing,
symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace,
mother, hug, shelter and beautify.
Those who have received these shawls have been
uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to
fly above their troubles..."
~Janet Severi Bristow
A prayer shawl is imbued with an intention of love, hope, peace or prayers for a return to health for the recipient: a gift from one soul to another. In this workshop we will combine your intention with the repetition of a mantra (prayer) in the tradition of a japa style meditation. Each week will begin by learning a knitting skill. Anyone can participate. Knitters are encouraged to ask questions, receive help with their project and will be guided deeper into their knitting meditation. You will be supported along your journey from casting on to caring for your finished project.
Stephanie Schenker is a 500hr trained yoga teacher and a 100 hr trained meditation teacher. She began teaching yoga in 2018 and meditation in 2019. She taught herself how to knit in 2009 and is very passionate about her work. She has been inspired to write her own knitting patterns from time to time. The shawl pattern for this workshop is one of her designs. Please do not reproduce or sell the pattern as it was designed intentionally and exclusively for workshop participants. However, participants are welcome to knit it many times over. Check out some of her work on Instagram @stephanieschenker
